About us.

Welcome to the home of Purdyston Maine Coons, owned by John and Linda Calvert.

Living in a stone built detached house in a popular part of Cleckheaton, (a small town on the eastern side of the Pennines), famous for Lion’s sweets, (where you can still get those midget gems), and also Panther motorcycles of years ago, we have been breeding and showing these lovely Maine Coon cats for around twelve years.

John is a semi-retired engineering machinist by profession and has a long term ambition to finish building a two inch scale working model traction engine in his garage workshop and where he also produces parts for old cars, notably Jowett.

Linda works part time as an assistant at local high street bakers so both have plenty of time to devote to the rearing of kittens plus all the other activities that have to be done to ensure healthy and active pets.

At present, (July 2010) we have  fourteen cats in total, one of which is our first Maine Coon, (Purdy), a silver tabby who was born in September nineteen ninety four.

We have three generations of stud cats. Brocstar Kincaid, (red silver tabby), was our original bought in stud and he went on to sire Purdyston Hugo Bosscat, (silver tabby), who in turn went on to produce Purdyston Montgomery, (Monty for short), a (brown tabby with white), all with our own different girls.

All our stud cats have been tested for the currently known HCM mutant gene and are negative.

Both Kincaid and Hugo are known to carry the solid and dilute gene so can produce several colour combinations while  Monty has proved that he carries the dilute gene.

The rest of our female brood are either neutered company cats for the boys, (they are big softies really and like the companionship of a female), or are breeding queens.

Three of our queens, (Purdyston La Toyah, Purdyston Miss Elainius and Purdyston Treacle Toffee), are titled.
We now have a new girl, born from Treacle, who is a blue tortie and white, which we will be breeding from in 2011

Our most affectionate female is Miss Elainius or Ellie as we like to call her.  She is a black smoke and white and likes nothing better than a lap to perch on.

Our ambition is to continue breeding healthy kittens of good size, type and temperament along with a personality typical of the breed.

On a different topic. if you click on 'Cat Equipment' on this site, you will find details of cat accessories that I manufacture to order, from my garage workshop although sometimes I have an occasional tower on hand. Details of sizes etc can be obtained by e-mailing me.
